The latest issue of the journal Theology & Sexuality (vol. 26, no. 1, 2020) opens with a special section dedicated to Bishop Christopher Disani Senyonjo and his work in promoting the human dignity and rights of LGBTQ people in Uganda. Senyonjo is a retired bishop in the (Anglican) Church of Uganda who lost his position in the church because of his “controversial” work. But as he himself riposted, as a Christian and clergy man it is simply his calling to defend the right of all God’s children.

Contributions to this special section were originally presented at a symposium at the University of Leeds in July 2018, when Senyonjo was awarded an honorary doctorate. The section opens with an introduction by Adriaan van Klinken, exploring the significance of Senyonjo’s work in the context of contemporary politics of sexuality in Uganda and in Africa more broadly. This is followed by an interview van Klinken had with Senyonjo about his commitment to, and understanding of, LGBT dignity and rights. The section is complemented by two articles, by Alistair McFadyen about “Understanding Senyonjo’s Ministry in the Light of Christian Theology“, and by Kevin Ward about “Bishop Senyonjo and the Church of Uganda“.
